Gypsy musicians at the Szolnok Goulash Festival Cherry festival at Nagykörű The nineteenth century saw substantial water management projects in the area of Nagykörű, not far from Szolnok. River control profoundly changed the traditional floodplain farming and the ecological system. After regulating the Tisza, forests and orchards were planted in the former floodplains. Baron György Petrovay the owner of the village of Nagykörű, founded a nursery garden and introduced the germersdorf cherry. To this day, cherry is the one of the main sources of income in this area. The largest festival in the region is the Cherry Festival. Cherry harvest festivals are very seldom held anywhere. As a cultural event it is unique and draws on local traditions. The cherry-related culinary events are the most popular, including among others contests for cherrybased food, Nagykörű cherry pálinka (the famous "77" which is made of 77 different types of cherry), and dishes made with traditional cooking technique. nmÊÊM 69.
