Budapesten a „kávéház" címet 1900-tól csak legalább 4 méteres belmagasságú, 150 m

2 alapterületű, utcaszinten lévő üzlet viselhette, ahol 2 vagy több biliárdasztal állt. (Amelyik üzlet ezeknek az elvárásoknak nem felelt meg, azt kávémérésnek nevezték.) A szocializmus korában ilyesféle különbségtétel nem volt: presszónak vagy eszpresszónak hívták azt is, amelyik régi nagykávéház helyén működött, meg azt is, ahol tenyérnyi lyukba gyömöszöli pár asztalnál szorongtak a vendégek - igaz, sokszor csak pár kurta percig. Az új helyek között is sok a kicsi és a még kisebb (olykor galériával segítenek magukon), de hiszen régen sem ez számított. A jó kávé, a kedves főnök, a fürge és mosolygós pincér a legkisebb kuckóban is csodál tesz. És milyen sok jó ember elfér egy-egy ilyen kicsi helyen... From 1900 only places with an interior measuring at least 150 square meters and 4 meters high, possessing a street front, with at least 2 or more billiard tables, could call themselves cafés in Budapest. (Those places that did not conform to these requirements were called colfee bars.) There was no such distinction made during the Socialist era: even those places operating on the site of old 'grand cafés' were called presse or espresso bars, even if the customers were huddled together al a couple of tables squashed into a hole that would fit in the palm ol ones hand - often only for a few brief moments, it is true. There are many tiny and ever tinier places amongst the new ones (sometimes they are augmented by a gallery), but even in the old days this was not what was important. Good coffee, a kind boss, a quick-witted, smiling waiter can do wonders even in the smallest nook. And it is amazing how many good people can fit into such a small space.
