seemed otherwise intact. Many pearls were missing, mainly on the right side of the back-panel, furtheron in the border-strap of the right-side ribbon, where it had been exposed to me­chanical stress during wearing. The gems are in­tact, on the settings of some of them a slight surface­corrosion could be ob­served. This is either an oxidic or sulphidic corro­sion, generated by the al­loying material of the gold, or - in case if the setting is gilt silver - it is some cor­rosion-product of the silver migrating to the surface. The lining which was put into the mitre in the last century, became worn-out mainly at the horns of the mitre. The weft threads car­rying the silver strips were freely floating. Only some smaller fragments remained of the silk atlas which was The mitre is intended to be used at some special occasions, there for our task was not only the coservation of the present condition, but also the comple­tion of the damaged, parts, with the original technique and with pearls. After the cleaning the sewing back of the pearls which had fallen off, the reinforc­ing of the pearls which were loosened and the replacement of the missing pearls was necessary. It was essential to support the lining which had been put into the mitre in the last century and to conserve the seams of it using sewing-conservation. About the conservation: After having made the cleaning trials, we cleaned the surfaces covered with pearls with a solution consisting of distilled water and alcohol. We have used for the lining of the cap.
