Dr. W. Endrei: Struggling of the textile Guilds against innovations Summary In this paper it is attempted to formulate in a more modulated manner the average judgement on the behaviour of the huilds - in this case textile guilds against technical innovations. By analysing the facts it can be shown that significant differences exist as for chronological as well as for regional distribution. In the first half of the Middle Age scarcely occur consequent resistencies to innovations and the ones occurring were not uniform /the fulling mills were prohibited only by the Flemish cities/ or only short-lived and always motivated by quality aspects /spinning wheel/. In the XV. century the number signs pointing to the stiffening of the guilds increases and their main argument is the aim at full employment /throwing/. From the XVI. century near all the innovations /raising, bandweaving, indigo/ have triggered desperate resistance of the guilds. There is, however, a difference between cities with their huilds taking part in ruling and such with the guilds excluded from it. Moreover it is conspicuous that in the countries situated eastwards of the river Elbe with their second serfdom as their peculiarity and with their weaker guilds the textile inventions extended mostly without difficulty. There is a precedent too for the members of the guilds using commonly the new machines produced by the industrial revolution flp.
