E. Bakay, Gy. Dischka, Dr., L. Kóczy, Dr., J. Schmalz, Dr., B. Tóth, Z. Véber, A. Vékássy, Dr., M. Zilahi, Dr.: A historical survey abou the training of skilled workers in the Hungarian textile industry Summary In the I8th century the production system in textile manufactures created a need for white collar jobs. As a soncequence of factory production the training of the technical intelligentsia was conducted in two types of training institutes: technical colleges and specialized secondary schools. In our country the training of technical intellectuals developed in three stages After three years' study, students who passed the examination secdesfully at the Institute of Engineers, founded in 1782, received a diploma in engineering. The Hungarian Royal Technical School "József" was opened in 1847 in the building of the University of Sciences. In 1850 this was incorporated with the Institute of Engineering, which in 1861 was raised to a rank of university and thus, as Hungarian Royal Technical University "József" it had a right to issue degrees in engineering. In 1889 Sándor Rejtő took the head of the department for mechanics and technology of the mechanical engineering faculty at the Technical University. It was he who put the descriptive course on textile-technology on a scientific basis. The Faculty of Textile-technology at the Technical University of Budapest and simultaneously the five-year course for mechanical engineers for the textile industry were founded after the liberation, in 1949. This was preceded by the State Technical College which ceased to exist in 1951 and its role was taken over by the evening and correspondence courses at the Technical University of Budapest. The present syllabuses at this university are reliable bases for training engineers engaged in research and development and engine building. Production engineers for the textile industry have been trained at the Technical College of Light Industry since the autumn of 19 70. After three years' training the students qualify as production engineers of the textile industry. Production and certificated engineers trained for textile chemistry are taught at the Technical University of Budapest for 3 or 5 years. Textile industrial designers receive high-level training at the School of Applied Arts. For the training of technicians engaged in the textile and garment industries several schools have been established. A great number of teachers, scientific institutes and the Hungarian Society of Textile Technology and Sciences provide further or post graduate training for people working in the textile industry. Skilled labour for the textile industry is trained in 42 vocational schools in Hungary 5 of which turn out skilled workers only for this industry. The respective figures for the garment industry are 77 and 2. Further education of skilled workers is directed and superintended by the Methodological and Retraining Institute of the Ministry of Light Industry.
