World War II destroyed about 25% of textile industrial equipment and there was a complete lack of raw materials. In order to re-start textile industrial production the Soviet Government gave assistance by supplying 50.000 t of cotton to be processed on a commission basis. In 19 48 a decree of the Government of the Hungarian Republic nationalized the textile industry. Textile industrial production progressed at a steady rate, new types of fibrous materials, new production techniques were introduced. The social status of workers has greatly improved together with working conditions, and a great number of social and cultural establishments were created. In 1970, the total value of textiles produced exceeded 22,8 billion Forints from which about 25% was exported. 58,5% of the export went to Socialist countries, whereas 41,5% of it was purchased by Wesrern trading partners. In 1970 the total number of employees in the textile industry amounted to 117.192. During the period of the 4th Five-Year Plan /1971-1975/ the reconstruction programme of Hungarian textile mills was launched with an objective of improving production facilities by modern equipment which would increase efficiency of production and solve the problems of labour shortage. /
