statistics of the theatre and. the examination ot the audience. However,in the course of research it turned out that the study of theatrical practice covered even greater a field than in had been thought, and therefore it can be looked upon as one of the major branches of the comprehensive study of the theatre. Consequently the range of its tasks has widened too. It takes part in the definition of the subject of theatre sciences and in the elaboration of its methods. Among other things there is the possibility that the art of the theatre might be approached by means of the results and theses of one of the youngest theories, the theory of information, because thetheatre is a form of the specific, artistic transfer and relaying of an emotional intellectual meaning that is expressed by words and by human gestures and is helped by a number of other symbols and signs. The manner of transfer and relaying is synchronous audio-visuality. If we regard the art of the theatre as the transmitting and reception of a particular code then the thorough study of the elements of the transmitting is indispensable. (For example acting in a narrower sense, producing, theatrical fine-arts, the theatrical text, the theory of theatrical practice, the method of creative work, technology» pedagogy etc.) At the same time the conscientious study of the elements of the "reception" Is just as import ant. (For example the place and circumstances of the performance, the types of buildings and stages; the study of the audience, the examination of its taste and psychology, an analysis of effect according to social strata, to districts and to age groups; the examination of the demand for theatrical performances and the examination of the supply; and the theoretical and practical problems of the most effectual methods.) - 188 -
