From the field of theatrical history Dr. Tekla Dömötör gave a lecture on the " Beginnings of Eastern European Acting ", discussing some common problems of the period between the ZVIth and the XVIlIth century in the history of the Eastern European theatre. Dr. Dömötör propounded the question how the Eastern European countries came to establish professional bourgeois acting in the modern times, and she discussed the circumstances and the time of this process. According to Jirmounski four methods can be applied in the comparative analysis: 1. the enumeration, description, contrasting and synchronous analysis of the historically determined phenomena; 2. historical-genetic comparison that examines the phenomena that are of common origin but in the course of their later divergent development have become differentiated; 3. historical-typological comparison that strives to explain the phenomena of different origin on the basis of their identical social development; 4. the analysis of the interaction of the laws of communication and receipt that are also dependent on the social development of the communicator and of the receiver. In the comparative analysis of the history of the Eastern European theatre the historical-typological method - supported by the other methods - can be used to the best advantage. This is quite natural since in this area, in the case of different nations speaking different languages we come across theatrical phenomena that cannot be explained either with their common origin or with a direct exchange, and that are only understandable when viewed from the similar level of their social development. - 185 -
