THEATRUM 1962 /Summary/ In the year 1952, on November 1st,the National Historical Museum of Hungarian Theatre has been founded. Already at the beginning of its activity, a section of the Museum studied the science of theatrical art. During the fruitful work of the first years, the necessity of an instituion - where not only the history of theatre, but also its present and even its fu­ture are studied -, became evident. To link theory and practi­cal work, in 1957. The Institute for Theatrical Art and Screen Art had been founded,by fusion of several kindred instituions. In 1959, the Institute for Screen Art became independent and the Institute for Theatrical Science came to life, while the National Historical Museum of the Hungarian Theatre became an independent department of this Institute, The present year-book gives an account of the work done in this decade, its results and successes. In Hungary, the theory of theatrical art and science has only been systematically studied in the last years. A new branch of this science is the science of the functioning of theatre. Its purpose is to approach theatrical aesthetics from a non-aesthetical standpoint, as some aesthetical problems can only be solved, if we know all the economic, technical etc. requirements of theatrical productions too.
