M INTRODUCTION Introduction Another year has gone by yet the composition of the Theatre Yearbook is unchanging. In the first part of the publication we present data about the repertory theatres and receiving venues which perform in Hungarian. It is also here that the reader can find information about production companies, open-air theatres and other theatre venues. Here you can also find data about the arts universities, especially theatre schools. The second part contains information about the events of the 2016-2017 theatrical season. You can find out where, when and what performances were presented by the Hungarian language companies from Hungary and abroad, and also the international guest performances by Hungarian companies abroad and foreign companies in Hungary. It is also here that we collected the awards of the theatre world. There is also a list about the ever-increasing number of theatre festivals and meetings. We also take note of the theatre personalities who passed away during the season. The volume is concluded by an ample list of references which presents the new theatre publications: monographs, journals, plays. This time our Yearbook comes with a slight delay. The reasons behind this are two largescale ventures. One is not yet visible to the public but we hope that it will very soon be. PIM-OSZMI transitioned to a new theatre database, called Huntéka, which will make data presentation better and quicker. The other was the project called The Preservation of Hungarian Theatre Memory, which had as a prerequisite the transition to Huntéka. In the framework of this large-scale research we collected and digitized all the available resources on three Hungarian theatres: Bárka Theatre, Hevesi Sándor Theatre in Zalaegerszeg and Móricz Zsigmond Theatre in Nyíregyháza. Documents included articles, photos, videos, manuscripts, brochures. The results of this monumental work will soon be visible online to the large public. We would like to carry out this comprehensive documentation work, if the means become available, for all the Hungarian theatres. The Editors 8
