back the family mansion and provide for the then 7 year-old Erhart. After Borkman's discharge from prison, Erhart returned to his parents' house; later, due to his university studies, he moved to town from the family home. The twins are now awaiting his regular evening visit in order to ask him to make a choice: should he stay with his aunt to comfort her and be the last resource of a terminally ill woman, or should he remain with his mother and fulfill her compulsive ambition, the restoration of the family's good name? In the meantime, the verbal fencing of the twins reveals the tragedy of the Borkman family. 1-2-3 Noise and the shuffling of feet can be heard from the main entrance. Borkman resumes his rigid pose. 1-1-6 The twins are expecting Erhart, but Fanny Wilton drops in unexpectedly. Having been unable to properly announce the unmannerly Fanny, the maid leaves with a hurt - but also scornful - look in her eyes that she extends to Erhart and Frida, who are waiting in the hallway. 1-1-7 Mrs Borkman introduces Fanny to Ella. 1-1-8 Erhart rushes in from the hallway and although he is very surprised, he bids his aunt, whom he hasn't seen for eight years, a warm, effusive welcome. Conflicts arise due to Fanny, whom Mrs Borkman starts to consider a rival. Erhart calls out to Frida, asking her to go upstairs to his father. I-2-4 Frida mounts the stairs. Borkman has been expecting someone: he has put on his jacket, snatched some notes, and prepared to deliver a speech. He is disappointed because it is only Frida, and he doesn't acknowlege her presence. He resumes his restless pacing. 1-1-9 The maid fetches another lantern, then exits. 1-1-10 Several conflicts are unfolding: Mrs Borkman vs. Erhart: because the young man is about to leave for a party given by the family of the lawyer who had denounced his father. Mrs Borkman vs. Ella: because Ella would rather see Erhart in the company of his peers than in his mother's custody. Fanny vs. Erhart: because the man is turned into a little boy as soon as he has his mother and foster mother near. The twin sisters vs. Fanny: because it seems obvious that the young, experienced divorcee has already taken possession of their boy. In the end Fanny leaves alone for the party. 54
