CSÍK VÁRMEGYE ÚJ SZÉKHÁZA THE NEW COUNTY HALL OF CIUC COUNTY Abstract The problem of constructing a new County Hall has been a main objective until the First World War in Ciuc. After relocating the institutions of the county’s administration to Miercurea-Ciuc, the building of a new County Hall became imminent, a goal that has not been lost out of sight neither by the county’s administration, nor its inhabitants, despite the numerous difficulties concerning terrain exchange, credit approval, financing, project realization, frequent modification of the construction budget, detachment of the architect Ignác Hám and other unpredictable impediments that have led to the delaying of the demolition and of finishing the works. The collective interest concerning the reconstruction of the County Hall has not reduced even at the beginning of the 20th century. At that time Imre Nagy Tivai has expressed his strong opinion about transforming the initial form and style of the construction to a non-functional and impersonal ensemble that wouldn’t represent a building worth to leave behind to succeeding generations. After 1870 the law-makers and the community has been preoccupied with the project and the building operations, including the modifications made along many decades, but the construction is not interesting only from this point of view. Thanks to Ignác Hám, Ciuc County could take pride in the County Hall that in structure also as in ornamentation corresponded to the principles promoted by the western counties of Hungary and perfectly integrated into the country’s third great construction phase of County Halls. Thus, it is the merit of Ignác Hám that in the case of Ciuc County’s County Hall we may talk not of provincial solutions but an exact project and an elegant finish of the building. 215
