Dr. Szabó Lajos: Nők a magyar sportban (A Sportmúzeum Kincsei 3. Budapest, 2003)

THE SOCIAL BACKGROUND OF WOMEN'S SPORTS The role of women in the first part of the 19th century was more or less limited to traditional family chores. Privileged or exceptional status was only enjoyed by the female members of aristocrat or noble families, who had free access to traditional sports like golf, hunting and horseback riding. In the course of social development, civilian rights of liberty were expanded which also impacted women's legal status in society. With their freshly gained access to higher education, even professional careers opened up for them. The role of women in families changed and the technical development in the 20th century provided women with more time to pursue sports. World War I brought about a major change, since women were put on jobs during and after the war which were formerly reserved for men. It would not have made sense to stop this shift of duties and thus it has become common that women take jobs as well. This board illustrates the sport which is probably the most natural one of all family sports. Excursions and longer hikes have been and will always be a favorite leisure activity for families. Regular outings with friend and family members are great opportunities to get to know the beauties of nature and promotes the protection of the environment, too.
