Tradicionális sportok és játékok Finnországban (Riita Forsman, Kenth Sjöblöm, Juha Kanerva)

The next important project within documentations of traditional sports' documentation was organised in the 1920' s by Toivo Okkola. the first director of Sports Museum of Finland, by the way. He organised together with The Society of Finnish Literature a competition with the theme "traditional plays". Okkola published the results of the collection in 1928 in his book "The games and the house plays of the Finns" . A director of Institut of Physical Education Klaus U. Suomela wrote two books which dealt with popular sports: "Merry tricks" (1932) and The History of Finnish Sport - Part I. (1944). Maximilian Stejskal who comes from Swedish-speaking minority defended his doctor's dissertation on popular sports in 1954. Nowadays the most prominent researcher in this area is probably historian Pekka Karkkainen from the University of Jyvaskyla. He has charged himself with writing about traditional sports in two most recently published books about Finns and sport. The other prominent and vital traditional game in addition to pesapallo (Finnish baseball) is kyykka. which is an old Karelian game. The playing of kyykka was on the decline in the end of the 20th century when photographer I.K. Inha discovered it. Kyykka is very similar to popular Russian game gorodki. It is quite an exception in Finnish game culture because it is the only slowly advancing and characteristically social game. No wonder that the origin of the game lies in Karelia where people are more jovial than elsewhere in Finland. Kyykka is even nowadays popular hobby especially among the immigrants from Karelia (during and after the Second World War) and their descendants. I must definitely mention now the name Valentin Kononen - does anybody know him? Well, he was silvermedallist in 50 kilometers walk at World Championships in Stuttgart, but he is also a Finnish champion in kyykka.
