ÏÏTezo (Qrüníeld) Ferenc dr. MEZŐ (GRÜNFELD) FERENC dr. 1885. március 13-án született a Zala megyei Pölöskefőn. 11 éves, amikor az első újkori olimpiát rendezik. A gyermek Mezőt teljesen lenyűgözik a versenyek, ekkor határozza el, hogy az olimpiák történetével kíván foglalkozni egész életén át. Görög—latin szakos tanári diplomát szerez. Előbb Nagykanizsán, majd a budapesti Mátyás Gimnáziumban tanít. Elmélyült kutatómunkát folytat az ókori görögök sportjáról, az ókori olimpiai játékokról. 1928-ban az amszterdami olimpiai játékok művészeti versenyein epika kategóriában „Az olimpiai játékok története" című müvével olimpiai bajnoki címet szerez. Távollétében — Amszterdamban először — az Ő tiszteletére kúszik fel a magyar lobogó az olimpiai árbocra. 1929-ben Klebesberg Kuno kultuszminiszter előszavával jelenik meg nyomtatásban is a győztes mű. A könyvet már 1930-ban Münchenben is kiadják. később számos további fordítás és kiadás következik, a könyv ma is a téma legfontosabb alapműve. Mező gyermekkorától kezdve gyűjtötte a sporttörténettel kapcsolatos dokumentumokat, így sportkönyvtára már a húszas években Magyarországon a legfontosabbak közé tartozik. Mint olimpiatörténész nagy tekintélyre tett szert, munkái tucatnyi nyelven jelentek meg szerte a világban. Szakírói, sportvezetői tevékenysége nyomán 1948-ban a Nemzetközi Olimpiai Bizottság tagjává választották. 1961. november 21-én, 76 éves korában halt meg. Hagyatékát a Testnevelési Tudományos Tanács megvásárolta és a Testnevelési és Sportmúzeumban helyezte el. A „Mező-gyűjtemény" több mint öt és félezer kötetet, megszámlálhatatlan eredeti iratot, fotót, érmet és jelvényt, számos emléktárgyat, díjat és oklevelet tartalmaz. As a child, Mezö was wholly enthralled by the Games and decides to devote his entire life to the Olympics. He graduates as a teacher of classical Greek and Latin. He teaches first in Nagykanizsa, and later at the Mátyás Gymnasium in Budapest. He became engrossed in scholarly research on the sports of the ancient Greeks, and on the classical Olympic Games. In 1928, at the Amsterdam Olympics he became the Olympic champion in the artistic contest with his work. The History of the Olympic Games. And even though he could not be there in person, the Hungarian flag was first raised in his honour at the Amsterdam Olimpics. In 1929 the work was published with a foreword by Kuno Klebelsberg, the Minister of Culture at that fine. A year later the book also appeared in Munich, and was translated into numerous other languages, running into several editions. The work remains one of the most important handbooks on this theme. Mezö soon started to collectdocuments and relics of sports history; his library was one of the most extensive as early as the 1920s. As a historian of the Olympics he had great authority, his works were published the whole world over. In 1948 he was elected member of the International Olympic Committee. He died on November 21, 1961, at the age of seventy-six. His estate was purchased by the Scholarly Council of Sports and was deposiled in the Museum for Sport and Physical Education. The Mezö Collection includes over 5500 books, innumerable original documents, photographs, medals, coins, countless relics, prizes and charters. This exhibition presents a selection from the photographic material of the collection.
