Rácz Jolán szerk.: Az Európai Unió támogatásával helyreállított műemlékek Magyarországon (Budapest, 1997)
Európa hatalmas kulturális gazdagsága az egész világ számára rendkívül fontos. Elgyönyörködteti a turistákat, éltető erővel táplálja a polgárokat. A kultúra egyéni jelleget kölcsönöz minden európai országnak, ugyanakkor össze is kapcsolja azokat. A kultúra fontosságát hangsúlyozó programokra tehát nincs szükségünk. Ezek a programok egyben ráirányítják figyelmünket a sokszínű európai kultúra különböző irányzataira, s emlékeztetnek azok esetleg háttérbe szorult vonulataira is. Hans Beck A Európai Bizottság Magyarországi Képviselete vezetője The vast cultural wealth of Europe is of importance to the whole world. It delights visitors and sustains natives. Culture gives unique characteristics to each country in Europe, it also binds the countries together. There is no need for books or programmes to tell us how important is the culture of Europe. Aside from the intrinsic aesthetic pleasure it gives us, it provides a sense of unity and identification across the continent. Thus Art Nouveau spread triumphantly from Glasgow to Barcelona, and from Brussels to Budapest, where are found some of the finest and most creative houses of this style. When you walk through Budapest, it is impossible not to feel the continuity of styles across Europe. Of course every city makes the style its own, but they are not afraid to learn from each other. We don't need programmes to tell us how important culture is. But we do need programmes to safeguard the vast heritage and to remind ourselves of all the different strands of European culture, some more marginalised then others. The EU's activities in the cultural heritage field, now known as the Raphael Programme, have since the early 1980s, been aimed at restoring and exploiting the cultural heritage of the Union, and in recent years also of Central and Eastern Europe. The nine Hungarian projects presented here, have been chosen for support under this programme. I welcome this beautifully produced publication which shows the range of projects in Hungary. These projects help to illustrate to a domestic and global audience, the wealth of culture in Hungary and its place at the heart of Europe.
