MŰHELY - Vukov Konstantin: A Vitéz János-Studiolo belső tere. Az esztergomi vár lakótornyának részleges elméleti rekonstrukciója

Bauperiode des Palastes Ende des 12. Jahrhunderts. Konstantin VUKOV THE INTERIOR OF THE SO-CALLED STUDIOLO OF JÁNOS VITÉZ. A PARTIAL THEORETICAL RECONSTRUCTION OF THE DONJON OF ESZTERGOM CASTLE The medieval royal palace in the donjon of Esztergom castle had presumably been used by the archbishops of Esztergom from the 14 th century on. In the second half of the 15 th century the palace was rebuilt by János Vitéz belonging to the circle of king Mathias I. The private rooms of the donjon were decorated at that time with renaissance wallpaintings. The walls of the so-called studiolo were covered with representations of the allegorical figure of the Virtues. During the Ottoman rule the room was demolished and later filled up with its own rubble a terrace of cannons was formed above it, so unfortunately only one painted wall have remained to us. , The wall-paintings were uncovered in the course of the 1934-38 excavations in Esztergom, when parts of the vaults and ribs were also found with details important to reconstruct the mural programme. As the archivolt was covered with representations of the Zodiac, the original one was reconstructed in 1972. The semicircular form of the arch is originating from the trapezoid plan of the interior. In the knowledge of the plan and the remains of the vaults it could be exactly reconstructed. The interior was covered with two fields of Roman cross vault divided with the Zodiac archivolt. In the northeastern corner a console remained in situ with a cross vault without ribs. Starting out from the comparison of this room and the remaining details the studiolo could be reconstructed. Its correctness is strengthened by the similar principle of the vaulting of the neighbouring so-called Beatrix room. These vaults belong to the late 12 th century architectural period of the palace. Beside the secco wall-painting covering the whole surface of the room the renaissance rebuilding concentrated mainly on the pavement. The covering of the donjon had emerged already in the 1930's. With the reconstruction of the vault and the building of the roof of the room above the constant leaks threatening the wall-paintings could be avoided.
