näheren Knie niederläßt. Für ihre Handgeste stammt die Idee von der Győrer Verkündigung von Paul Troger, denn die Kunsthistoriker sprechen von diesem als Vorbild für Dorffmaister. Die architektonischen Elemente im Bild werden nach dem ersten Foto wiederhergestellt, die Decke auf dem Geländer mit dem Flechtband rechts kann nach den Darstellungen der gleichen Decke auf anderen Dorffmaister-Bildern ausgebessert werden. Alle anderen Figuren kommen mit Hilfe der abgenommenen Zeichnung zurück an ihre alte Stelle. Die Restaurierung haben wir am 17. Oktober 1997 begonnen und am 23. Dezember 1998 beendet. Wir möchten unbedingt betonen, daß die Wiederherstellung eines intakt gebliebenen Barock-Freskos ein erhabeneres Gefühl ist, als der Tatsache der völligen Vernichtung ins Auge zu sehen. Es kann nicht davon gesprochen werden, daß wir diese großangelegte Rekonstruktion lediglich mit dem Ziel der Selbstverwirklichung anfingen. Alle unsere Entscheidungen hat jener Wille gelenkt, daß die in Wandbildern verkörperten Gedanken von János Szily so erscheinen sollen, daß diese der gläubigen Dorfgemeinschaft sowie den Besuchern von Nova ein Erlebnis bieten. Lajos VELLEDITS RESTORATION OF THE VAULT FRESCO REPRESENTING ANNUNCIATION IN THE PARISH CHURCH DEDICATED TO THE ASCENSION OF THE VIRGIN IN NOVA The contract of the interior decoration of the church of Nova was signed in 10

th September, 1799 by the archbishop of Szombathely, János Szily and the painter Stephan Dorffmaister. The document which had remained to us did not only prescribe for the artist what and where to represent, but stylistic questions and details of the composition as well. The work was most probably finished the next year as it was proved by the date of 1780, that could be seen on the fresco. The nave consists of two similar vault fields complemented with a narrow vault above the choir. The domed field towards the entrance is decorated with the scene of Annunciation. It is surrounded with a painted architectural decoration. In the four narrowing pendentives the figures of the four evangelists are sitting on consoles painted for them. The wall paintings have been restored three times in the last hundred years, but details of the scenes relevant to the content were not changed. The first restoration took part presumably in 1906, when - as it could be seen on photos - part of the loose plaster was totally knocked off the wall, and a partly new composition was made. The second restoration of the whole series of wall paintings was carried on by Károly Királyfalvy Krafft in 1935-36. From the point of restoration history his conservation was respectable, although the materials he had used were unfortunately poor.
