Ferenc DÁVID R. MAVIEZ: A HANDBOOK OF ROOM-, DECORATION- AND ORNAMENTAL PAINTING. (DETAIL) 12™ CHAPTER Formed decoration, which had appeared earlier only in special rooms, spread in the 18th century in series of rooms. There was an inner order of the manner of decoration, with different materials, forms and usage belonging to them. Following this painted decoration became part of a larger unit, that had used the picture and its frame similarly, and tried to fill architectonic frames and interpret the function of the given spaces. The next step was the colour conception of the whole building. The need was formed in France and spread to East from there. Beside well-known treatises simpler works were born, like this, which could be used as sources. The author was a decorator, and his work was the handbook of room painting and decoration. The translated part of the work seems slightly overzealous, not void of dilettante statements, still reflects the age when that need was general and the craftsman was competent. The work of R. Maviez was written in 1836 and published in German in 1837 in Leipzig and Quedlinburg (Vollstaendiges Handbuch der Zimmer-, Decorations und Staffiermalerei. Nebst Anweisungen zum Lackieren, zur Holzvergoldung und zum Aufziehen der Papiertapeten, sowie Belehrungen über die erschiedenen Farbestoffe und Oele und über die Bereitung aller Arten von Leim- und Oelfarben. 2286). The existence of the work in Keszthely gave a start to publish the chapter reflecting French situation in Hungarian. Some new experiences prove that the need for colouring the whole building was not unknown in Hungary in the time of its publication in Germany.
