MŰHELY - Bozóki Lajos: Franz Anton Hillebrandt elbontott temploma az esztergomi várhegyen

Lajos BOZÓKI FRANZ ANTON HILLEBRANDT'S PULLED DOWN CHURCH BUILDING ON THE CASTLE HILL OF ESZTERGOM Although with the 1683 victory at Párkány the fortress of Esztergom was deliberated from Ottoman rule, the building of the archiépiscopal centre was begun only in 1761 during the archiepiscopacy of Ferenc Barkóczy had made two plans with the chief architect of the Royal Chamber, Franz Anton Hillebrandt: on the second series of plans no imperial restriction of retaining the fortress walls had to be taken into consideration. Between 1763 and 1765 the eastern bulwark of the Castle Hill was pulled down, extensive field-work was made and the pulling down of the medieval cathedral was begun simultaneously with with the foundation of the Baroque one. The work was not carried on because of the archpishop's death. On the place of the planned cathedral, as a prevention of the archpishop's repatriation a smaller church, also planned by Hillebrandt was built between 1768 and 1772. The newly discovered drawings from the Lux-bequest of the OMVH Plan Collection are showing this church dedicated to St. Stephen and are probably copies of the lost original plans or surveys. The details of the drawing show several similarities with the wooden model preserved in the cathedral of Esztergom, and with the ground and elevation plan published by Johann Nepomuk Máthes, the stylistic characteristics suggest the personal planning of Hillebrandt. The drawings of the Lux-bequest must have been either copies of the original plans, or surveys of the conditions before the 1814 rebuilding. The person making them might have had an access to the original ones on the Baroque architectural exhibition organized in 1943 and had an opportunity to make their copies.
