mus. Er arbeitete als Komitats-, Stadt- und Gutsingenieur, doch stand er kürzere oder längere Zeit auch im Dienst anderer Körperschaften, wie z. B. des Geniekorps und der - außer dem Eisenbahnbau modernsten Unternehmen - Donau- Dampfschi ffgesellschaft. Außer diesen, das wesentlichste der Ausstellung betreffenden wenigen Gedanken möchte ich kurz über deren strenggenommene fachwissenschaftliche Bedeutung reden. An Prokopps Tätigkeit knüpft sich eng die Laufbahn einiger, bescheidenerer Provinzmeister, der Architekten István Kováts, Julius Wurneb und István Haynald. Die Schätzung dieser, bei weitem nicht uninteressanten, schöpferischen Persönlichkeiten und ihrer Werke unterstützt die Forderung nach lokaler Forschung, die bis auf heute neben der Bearbeitung der hauptstädtischen Künstler und ihres Schaffens unbilligerweide in den Hintergrund gedrängt wird. Dénes KOMÁRIK THE EXHIBITION OF THE ARHITECT JÁNOS PROKOPP (18251894) The text below was told at the opening of the exhibition of the not too well known architect. Through the carrier of János Prokopp we can have a glimpse on the formation and development of a 19th century architect's existence and work.This was a period characterized at its beginning by guilds, that have later been disintegrated and its last two decades were the time of the development of free trade. He had spent his life however outside the frames of declining guilds, except the education and travels. He had been working as a county, town and domanial engineer, but for shorter or longer periods he had been member of other institutions, like for example the engineer corps doing building work, or the Danube Steamship Company, the most modern enterprise beside railway contruction. Beside these few thoughts concerning the essence of the exhibition,! would like to stress its importance from scientific point. Prokopp'

s career is closely connected with those of a few country architects of lesser importance:

István Kováts, Julius Wumeb and István Haynald. The evaluation of the works of these architects is proving the importance of local research,that has been fallen into the background undeservedly till today by the research of architects of the capital.
