ELMÉLET - F. Mentényi Klára: A mai magyar műemlékvédelem „hitelességéről"

Klára MENTÉNYI-FACSÁDY ON THE „AUTHENTICITY" OF MODERN HUNGARIAN MONUMENT PROTECTION The independent organization of monument protection founded following World War II. in 1957. - contrary to the practice of other European countries - was totally under the control of building affairs. Although legistlative and official work was made easier by this, and an independent contructing network was created, but scientific work was pushed into the background. The outstanding architects representing the moderns stylistic trends of this early period - first of all László Gerő and others - had an important role in the fact that reconstruction, and within it the architectural task was in the centre of the activity of the institute. Theory based on the so called Chart of Venice proclaimed in 1964 (Miklós Horler, Dezső Dercsényi, etc.) was proving the practice, while the architects - in the possession of an ever increasing knowledge -, freely, without any kind of criticism could plan often really self-contained reconstructions. Archeological and art historical research, developing in the meantime concerning both their methods and results, mainly as a result of the outstanding scientific and organizing work of the art historian Ferenc Dávid, was still serving the work of reconstruction, by producing facts, but had nothing to do with the way of the presentation. The following factors could be mentioned as causes for the identical problems of Hungarian monument protection working like this: - The modern architectural style developed in the beginning of the century was replaced by newer styles questioning just its essentials, the strength of the architect which was able to form society. - The civil town-planning trend became very popular in Hungary, which - not listening to the reluctance of official monument protection - placed in the centre of interest first of all historizing architecture. - The public expectations towards monument protection have changed, modern people protect against any kind of education, harmony is expected, so the practice of showing periods of different ages in one building is rejected. - The one-sided interpretation of the complex idea of monument protection can no longer be maintained, the pushing into the background of the historical-aesthetical approach.
