Károly SONKOLY A NEWER DWELLING HOUSE IN THE CITY OF PÉCS WITH MEDIEVAL DETAILS No 6. Franciscan street The city house in 6 Franciscan's street was surveyed in 1991, the result of which it was discovered that even in the first storey of the building there are still standing medieval walls. In that period Jókai square, which the house is facing, must have been a commercial centre of the city surrounded by storeyed buildings. In the case of this building two medieval periods might be supposed. The earlier is, when the two houses, built by scattered development method were built together at the beginning of the 16th century, and an L-shaped, storeyed house standing along the front was built. This was inhabited even in the period of the Ottoman Rule, and was burnt down only in the time of the Serb ravage, in 1704 and was ruined. It was reconstructed in the mid 18th century, when the ground-floor rooms were vaulted. At the end of the 18th century its owner had extended it, and a stair-case was built. The decorative paintings discovered in the front rooms of the building's first floor were made in this time. The Gothic pavillion in the garden was erected in the first half of the 19th century. Both in the ground-floor and first-floor rooms several 19th century ornamental paintings were found. At the turn of the century wooden show-cases were appearing on the front facade. In this time shops were opened in the groundfloor front rooms. The gate was made narrower, and in the course of interiour changes the gateway was turned into a narrow corridor. The main facade was rebuilt several times in the 20th century. In the course of the reconstruction following the survey the house was extended toward North, and the offices of a bank and different shops were placed there.
