Emődi Tamás: Előzetes jelentés a váradi konventuális ferences templom kutatásáról
Preliminary Report on the Survey of the Conventual Franciscan Church of Várad (Oradea) Tamás Emődi In 1827 Professor Pál Nagy uncovered a crypt under the choir of a mediaeval church, situated in the Venetian Quarter of Nagyvárad (Oradea). In the spring of 1989 the foundation of a hospital's new wings was laid in the same part of the town. The author was not allowed to carry out excavation here, and was only able to make observations and collect finds surreptitiously in the ditches made by the backhoes. The uncovered foundation revealed the choir of a church, together with two rooms adjoining it from the north. The choir was built in two stages: first an approximately square-shaped (8 by 7.5 metres) choir was built here, to which an elongated polygonal sanctuary was added later. There were no more buildings belonging to the part of the choir built in the first period. The two adjoining rooms on the north side of the choir, which were the remaining section of a monastery wing, were built in the second phase. The first phase lasted approximately from 1250 until 1280. The second phase dates back to the second half of the 15th century, after 1440. According to the authorós view the uncovered remains are identical with the choir of the Conventual Franciscan Monastery. Illustrations 1. The plan of the uncovered section of the monastery 2.
