Vándor László: A Zala megyei ferences kolostorok kutatása

The Study of Franciscan Monasteries in Zala County László Vándor The best extablished mendicant order in the area of the mediaeval County of Zala was that of the Franciscans. They built seven (possibly eight) monasteries during the period between the 13th and the 16th century inclusive, in addition to taking over the Pauline Monasteries deserted in the second half of the 15th century. In spite of all this, the research of the architectural heritage left behind by them has been started only recently. During the past fifteen years, the author of the present article has been involved in the archaeological research of three different Franciscan monuments, and also collected the written evidence on the topic. The study of the Monastery of Egervár revealed the existence of a workshop of Austrian origin, which in the second half of the 15th century constructed the buildings of aristocratic families in the western parts if Transdanubiam using moulded bricks. In the course of the excavation work in Zalaszentgrót it turned out that the landlord bringing the Franciscans to this region gave a 13th or 14th century church to the order, and they built their monastery next to this church. They also embarked on the reconstruction of the church, although that work was never completed. The research of the most completely preserved monument, the Church of Keszthely, primarily helped to shed light on the problem of the Franciscans' settlement here, as well as on the problem of the St. Lawrence Chapel which was used before completion of the church. In contention with earlier views, the author of the present article was of the opinion that the St. Lawrence Chapel was not underneath the chancel of the existing church; instead, he identified it with the round church and its later additions found south from the church. Of the Franciscan Monasteries in Zala County, the buildings of both the Marian and the Observant Orders displayed characteristics of their own; nevertheless, in their main features they followed the general type of Franciscan buildings found in Hungary. The monasteries were built in the western parts of the county, in an area that was rapidly developing. Illustrations 1. The groundplan of the Church and Monastery of Egervár 2.
