Kralovánszky Alán: Koldulórendek Székesfehérvárott és Veszprém megyében
Mendicant Orders in Székesfehérvár and in the County of Veszprém Alán Kralovánszky In the brief study of the mendicant monasteries in the Counties of Veszprém and Fejér, we simultaneously considered the administrative boundaries of the two counties - both the mediaeval and the present-day ones - together with the organizational structure of the mendicant orders. The chronological scope of the study is set between the 13th and the 17th century inclusive; the resettlement following the Turkish retreat is also studied. The basis of the present study is formed by written documents; the archaeological, architectural and art historical evidence is extremely scarce. Up until 1543, the mediaeval centre of the Franciscan Order of the Marians was in Székesfehérvár. The monasteries in Obuda, Pest, Szeged, Falkos and Keszthely fell under its jurisdiction. In the 17th century reappearing Franciscans extablished monasteries in the strip of land as defined by the recaptured fortresses: Pápa, Sümeg, Veszprém. The precise location of the Franciscan Monastery in Székesfehérvár is unknown. On the basis of surviving illustrations, its suggested location was in the so called Buda suburban neighborhood in the vicinity of the Buda Gate. After 1460, the centre of the Salvatorian Order was in Uzsaszentlélek. Its jurisdiction, depending on the Turkish military operations, was extended to the monasteries at Pápa, Tálod, Várpalota, Egervár, Szentgrót, Tárnok, Csákány, Hedrehely and Remetinc (Remetinec). At Uzsaszentlélek, the Franciscans took over a deserted Pauline monastery in the 15th century. The archaeological survey of the ruins of the monastery was done by Iván Ádám at the turn of the century, and it has been authenticated only recently. The Franciscan Monastery of Tálod — again, a former Pauline residence — is also known from Iván Ádám's archaeological survey. The precise location of the monastery at Várpalota is currently being determined. The Dominicans founded two establishments in Székesfehérvár in the 13th century: the Parish Church and Monastery dedicated to St. Margaret and the Convent of the Virgin Mary. Both of these were situated in the socalled suburb Buda. The Dominican convent in Veszprém was founded in 1240 by Bishop Bartholomew. Its location and architectural style are known to us from the archaeological excavations carried out in 1936. Illustrations 1.
