some spirit of Frank Lloyd Wright's architecture or the feelings of Japanese tradition (special the tree-piles, which originally ought to be bamboo, in fron of the inner steps). Light unpainted wood together with the white color started a long tradition in Finnish interior architecture. Above the front door is a free-form canopy supported by pillars. From the curved hallway, a few stairs lead up to the building's central space, the drawing room, which is dominated by an enormous fireplace. The basement comprises a drawing room music room - library space, and opposite it is a simpler dining and kitchen wing. The walls of the drawing room are almost entirely of glass; the link between inner and outer space is unbroken. On the upper floor there are more private rooms. In the facades, teak, spruce, slate and brick create strong contrasts. The outer walls of the bedrooms and the kitchen wing are simple, white; the walls of the library and the studio are more strongly emphasised, wood and stone. The natural materials of the interior spaces and the pale colouring are in harmony with the surrounding landscape, and the various materials are combined in a refined way (Paatero, 1998 and Curtis, 1998). Aalto was a master to combine different kind of things, he looked the nature as a model for 'flexible standardization' and the concept of 'aestheticity'. He compared the 'expanded Karelian house' to 'biological cell formation', which can grow organically. His architecture has a dialogue between Finnish vernacular architecture and classic themes in urban context. SOURCES Alvar Aalto in seven buildings, Interpretations of an architect's work.
