Előadások - Ismini TRIANTI: Restoration work carried out on the Acropolis of Athen
assigned their places on the basis of a general resemblance to blocks of similar form. In other words, Balanos did not devote enough effort to finding the exact place for each block in the building. But there are ways of determining this. The shape of the block tells one where it went in the building as cornice, column drum, orthostate and so on. But there are other technical features such as dowel cuttings, pryholes, margins etc. which show how blocks were set up in relation to each other and make it possible to assign each block its place within the fabric ot the building. 4 Investigations of the Acropolis Monuments conducted after Balanos time have contributed new knowledge of the architecture. 5 In recent years work carried out within the framework of the program of the restoration of Acropolis Monuments has revealed features of the monuments that have been hitherto inaccessible to scholars and also made it possible to identify many disjecta membra, giving a strong new impetus to research.
