range into three vertical zones. He consistently drew these zones in brown, blue and white in his map. The blue colour indicates the lower regions of the Tatras (670-1370 m), blue represents the zone of mountain pines (Pinns montana) at 1400-1700 m, while the highest lying region shown in brown is the zone of the Alpine meadows, rocks and snowfields. Wahlenberg was greatly interested in the snow-limit and the timberline in the Carpathians. He also studied the relationship between the existence or nonexistence of certain plants and the soil type. FLORA CARPATHORUM PRINCIPALIUM (j y f / // /m ahlenberg studied the Tatra and Fátra Mountains for four months. He pubiished his observations in a comprehensive book, Flora Carpathorum Principalium, printed in Latin in 1814 in Göttingen. His work is one of the most important classical books written on the Tatras. The volume consists of three parts. The first, introductory chapter is followed by the explanation of the geography of the Tatra Mountains and the general description of the diversity of the flora. The third chapter is a detailed list of the plants. Wahlenberg described one new species, the marigold (Gnaphalium Carpathicum Wahlenb. ). IN THE CHAIR OF LINNÉ fter Wahlenberg returned home, he became an assistant in botany at Uppsala University. Besides, he intensively dealt with medical research. He soon became a teacher of medicine. In 1829, when he was only 49, received the professorship in medicine and botany. He inherited the chair of Linné and was a professor for 22 years, until his death.
