When Ferenc Hopp, art collector and great traveller (also the leader of the Calderoni and Partner Co.) left Iiis photographs and slides to the Hungarian Geographical Society in his last will, they were entrust to Cholnoky's knowledgeable hands, so enriching the archive section of the university. The aging Cholnoky not only transformed the photographs 'accidentally found' into objects assisting scientific study, but through including the pictures of the National Museum in one of his popular book/l Kárpátoktól azAdriáig (From the Carpathians to the Adriatic), he also showed the speciality of this widely applicable object of art. The huge collection established by him is one of our most valuable monuments of photography and scientific history. Today, when photography is a cherished part of our cultural heritage, Cholnoky's cautious and circumspective way of thinking influences us. We hope that this exhibition and the accompanying catalogue attests to the presence of his mentality.
