MAGYAR-AMERIKAI FÖLDTUDOMÁNYI KAPCSOLATOK A Washingtonban 1989 júliusában megrendezett XXV11I. Nemzetközi Geológiai Kongresszus adta a gondolatot, hogy röviden áttekintsük a hazai geológia és geográfia amerikai vonatkozásait, tudománytörténeti mérföldköveit. A témakör feldolgozásában az MTA Föld- és Bányászati Tudományok Osztálya, az MTA Geokémiai Kutatólaboratóriuma, a Központi Földtani Hivatal, a Kossuth Lajos Tudományegyetem, a Természettudományi Múzeum, valamint a Magyar Állami Földtani Intézet munkatársai és az érdi Magyar Földrajzi Múzeum köré csoportosult tudományos kutatók önzetlenül működtek közre, a kiadvány nyomdaköltségeit pedig a két utóbbi intézmény közösen vállalta. A magyar—amerikai földtudományi kapcsolatok szerény kezdete a nagy felfedezések korára nyúlik vissza. Több mint 400 év telt el azóta, hogy egy fiatal magyar humanista tudós, képzett geográfus, a budai születésű Parmenius István közreműködésével Sir Humphrey Gilbert expedíciója megvetette alapját az észak-amerikai angol birtokoknak, amely csírája lett a legnagyobb tengeri világhatalom, majd a legfejlettebb államszövetség kifejlődésének. Kiadványunk alkotógárdája nem vállalkozhatott arra, hogy teljes áttekintést nyújtson az utóbbi négy évszázad magyar—amerikai tudományos kapcsolatairól, hiszen az vaskos könyvet igényelne. Csupán szemelvények közlésére szorítkozhatunk, de ezekből is kiderül, hogy mily sok szállal kapcsolódott össze a magyar földtudomány a rohamléptekkel fejlődő észak-amerikai kutatásokkal. Különösen az utolsó száz esztendőben fonódtak szorosra a szálak, amikor a magyar geológusok és geográfusok egész sora utazott Amerikába, és mindkét fél számára előnyös tanulmányokat folytattak. Ezekből kaphatnak szerény válogatást kiadványunk olvasói. Szerkesztő HISTORY OF AMERICAN—HUNGARIAN RELATIONS IN THE FIELD OF EARTH SCIENCES The 28th International Geological Congress, held in Washington 1989, has given us the idea to give a brief summary concerning the joint American —Hungarian aspects of geography and geology, with special respect to the history of Earth Sciences, and its most important milestones. This work is a joint product of the genereous work of the associates of the Section Geo- and Mining Sciences of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the Central Office of Geology, Lajos Kossuth University, Hungarian Natural History Museum, the Hungarian Geological Institute, and the team, organized by the Hungarian Geographical Museum. Costs of the publication were covered by these two latter institutions. The beginnings of the American —Hungarian relations in the held of Earth Sciences go back to the period of great geographical discoveries. Already more than 400 years ago a young Hungarian humanist and geographer, Stephen Parmenius of Buda, took part in Sir Humphrey Gilbert's expedition, and this meant the beginning of the emergence of the British colonies in North-America, and these later became the largest maritime power, and the most advanced union of federal states. Of course, the present booklet could not cover the total range of American —Hungarian scientific relations of the past four centuries, since it would require a series of monographs. Only short essays could be included that, however, reveal the manifold relations that became more intensive especially in last 100 years. In this period several Hungarian geologists and geographers visited North-America, and their studies proved to be fruitful for all the partners concerned. A modest selection from these results are included in the present volume. The Editor
