ÉRTEKEZÉSEK - Borsos Balázs: A Teleki-expedíció anyaga a Magyar Néprajzi Múzeumban

THE ETHNOGRAPHICAL COLLECTION OF TELEKI'S EXPEDITION IN THE HUNGARIAN ETHNOGRAPHICAL MUSEUM Also from ethnographical aspect, Teleki's expedition can be regarded as one of the most successful exploration ventures by Hungarians. Teleki and his companion, Höhnel, reported on several tribes then unknown to scholars (the Turkana, Resiat, and Rendille), while their descriptions of other tribes (the Massai and Kikuyu) modified the picture formed previously about these people. In addition to the description of the tribes visited, they collected material representing their culture. Paît of this collection is owned by the Hungarian Ethnographical Museum (338 objects), some pieces were lost or taken abroad. The distribution of the material from 16 tribes is rather uneven, many tribes visited and described are only represented by few objects (such as the Rendille and Ndorobo). There is no material about several peoples first described by members of Teleki's expedition (the Suk and Burkenedji). More than a third of all objects belonged to one of three peoples (the Turkana, Massai and Kikuyu). One-third of the objects are weapons, more than one-third are jewelry, and the rest are pieces of clothing, vessels or other utensils. Translated by D. Lóczy A kenyai népcsoportok földrajzi elhelyezkedése (J. E. Goldthorpe—F. B. Wilson: Tribal maps of East Africa and Zanzibar c. könyvéből, Kampala, 1960).
