The weevil fauna of the Bakony (Coleoptera: Brachyceridae, Curculionidae)

THE WEEVIL FAUNA OF THE BAKONY (COLEOPTERA: BRACHYCERIDAE, CURCULIONIDAE) The aim of this work is to present the weevil species (Brachyceridae, Curculionidae) found in the Bakony Mountains. All collection data since the 1880s mentioned in literature (KUTHY 1896), (WACHSMANN 1907), (ENDRŐDI 1959, 1960b, 1961c, 1969, 1970) and found in a few Hungarian museums (Bakony Natural History Museum in Zirc, Savaria Museum in Szombathely, Mátra Museum in Gyöngyös, Kazinczy Museum in Sátoraljaújhely) as well as in some private collections, are summarized and completed with distribution and host plants data further with coloured photos and range maps of the beetles. I have taken part in „The Nature Landscape of the Bakony Mountains" fauna research program organised by the Bakony Natural History Museum collecting beetles for more than ten years. In this work, made in my leisure time, I have used the latest scientific literature. In Hungary there are about 900 known weevil species (Brachyceridae, Curculionidae), the two-thirds of them are found int he Bakony Mountains and mentioned in this publication, i. e. 597 species. Among them 56 species are new in the fauna of Hungary described earlier in my several publications (PODLUSSÁNY 1980,1996, 2001, CZETŐ et al. 1985, GYÖRGY and PODLUSSÁNY 2005). The following results of the long-lasting investigating work are worth to emphasize: Brachysomus mihoki Penecke, 1914 - one of the endemic species of the Bakony Mountains, now under protection - can be found in old beech-wood; further two species from the red book - protected by law since 2001 - Camptorrhinus statua (Rossi, 1790) and Gasterocercus depressirostris (Fabricius, 1792) are living in old oak-forests. At night these active species fly to light and often land in light-traps. There are also rare species like Tanysphyrus ater Blatchley, 1928 - some specimens have been collected in Hungary, and only one from Bakony; there are only two specimens of Argoptochus (Mylacoptochus) viridilimbatus Apfelbeck, 1808 collected in the Bakony Mountains; Barypeithes (Exomias) tenex Boheman, 1843 is found in Hungary in the Bakony Mountains only; the unique specimen of Plinthus squalidus elekesi Ormay, 1888 turned up in June 1897 in Pápa and is new for the Hungarian fauna. I thank first of all my Family specifically my Father, as well as my friends, the many collectors and researchers.
