"The dance of three hundred widows" is a name applied not only to a legend type but also to a Hungarian funeral dance listed in recent general works and analyses of dance history as belonging in the group of the most archaic (ritual, ceremonial) dances. In origin it is related to mining and miners in the same way as the 17

th century hammer and iron tool dance of Újbánya or the permonyik dance performed in the late 19

th and early 20

th century in Dobsina. Finally, the study examines and sums up the adaptations in literature of the legend and dance. In the Annexe the authors give the full text of records in written sources of the story and its folklore variants and also give a selection of one or two adaptations in literature.
