RESUME Zoltán Gozsy:The Significance of Frigyes Pesty's Collection of Place-names The study analyses Frigyes Pesty's collection of place-names completed in the 1860-s, using examples from Békés, Borsod, Szatmár, Szolnok and Veszprém counties. The author places Pesty's work in the process of place-name research, then analyses it considering how and to what extent it meant a change in perspective in the Hungarian historiography of the second half of the 19th century. The aim of the study is to prove that Pesty's work, both as a whole and in its details, is suitable for microhistorical, mentality-historical analysis and for detailed examination. The significance of the source is strengthened by several factors. The accounts inform us about periods of time about which no local traditions were recorded either earlier or later. We hear about events not mentioned in written sources, therefore the oral tradition published here may reveal „hidden realities". Csaba Csdíi':From the Documents of the Israelite Central Board of Somogy County, 1868 (source publication) The aim of the source publication is to present the convocation of the Israélite Central Assembly of 1868, the aspects of the election events related to Somogy County, further to pubTish documents on the social structure of the contemporary local Jewish communities, unknown so far. The present source publication and the introductory study on the 1868 general assembly is the first one in the country which deals with the topic within the framework of a smaller administrative unit (county) . In the introductory study of the publication of 27 documents the auüior lays a particular emphasis on the secondary social-historical informational value gained from the sources and on the analysis of the contemporary pubhcistical literature produced parallel in time with the pubhshed documents. Placed in a country-wide context, the study presents the views on emancipation and assimilation documented in Somogy County by the contemporary Jewish society and the majority society. Then, through comparing the 1868 population census and the election registration data, the study raises the question of how great the public activity could be among the Jewish concerning the general assembly. Both the documents of the source publication and the introductory study partly using them highlight the fact that in the issue of the orthodox-neolog schism the view known from the neolog Jewish historiography, which intends to identify orthodoxy with ..backwardness" and a total social isolation, calls for a strong criticism. Balázs Récsei: The Registration of the Merchants and Craftsmen in Somogy County in 1869 (source publication) The collection of documents superscribed „The Conscription of the Merchants and Craftsmen of Somogy County in 1869" is a source much sought after by local historiographers. In the volume the whole of the substance of the conscription is published. The preparation of the source was due to Act VI 1868 on the chambers of commerce and industry. Out of the 316 communities of the county, data about 291 (92%) can be found in the conscription. The source publication contains the names, occupations and habitations of 3000 people, as well as the magnitude of their taxes and whether they worked with a journeyman. This is slightly more than 1 per cent of the county's population. Even together with their family members they only meant 4-8 per cent of the population, but they played a decisive role in the economic and social life of the given community. Thus we can form a notion about the craftsmen and merchant population entitled to vote in most communities of Somogy County. The occupational variety may indicate the stage of the economic development of a given community. Orientation and easier identification in the source publication is assisted by the district-based arrangement of the communities and by the information on the spelling varieties of the place-names. The 1869 census data of the communities of Somogy County whose population was below 2000 are published here for the first time and parallel to these we indicate the conscription data recorded in the given community. The publication is supplemented by a vocabulary of profession-names, based on a contemporary defining dictionary.
