Dokumentumok az MDF korai történetéből With its actions, the Rumanian government has also violated the stipulations of the peace treaties of Trianon, 1920, and Paris, 1947, in particular also the 1919 Paris Convention on the Protection of Minorities, which is part of the Trianon peace treaty, guaranteeing the ethnic minorities the right to autonomy. The government of the United Kingdom was also among the countries signing and ratifying the above treaties. We therefore beg to appeal to you, Mrs. Prime Minister, since Your Excellency represents the United Kingdom, one of the signatory states of the above peace treaties. We appeal to you also, Your Excellency, because of your eminent personality, your political far-sightedness, your international authority, based on all this, and your ability to not only recognize problems but to also bring about their solution. We appeal to you and we confide in your all European responsibility, which has been proved so often. Therefore we ask you to consider and take the proper measures to protect the minorities exposed to the threat of genocide and, thus, to secure peace in Europe. The Hungarian Democratic Forum feels that the only approach permitting success is to make the problem an international issue, submitting it to the United Nations, where the UN Secretary General should appoint and instruct an international commission and where, in particular, the countries of Western Europe should impose economic sanctions.209 The Hungarian Democratic Forum is ready to provide further documentation and detailed information and would be highly obliged, if it were granted the opportunity of a personal interview with you, Your Excellency. Thanking you sincerely and respectfully for your attention, I remain, on behalf of the below members of the Hungarian Democratic Forum, Zoltán Bíró, literary historian, Dénes Csengey, author Sándor Csoóri, author, István Csurka, author Gyula Fekete, author, Lajos Für, historian Rudolf Joó, historian, Csaba Gy. A levelet jegyzők tudatában meghatározó precedenst jelenthetett az 1957 januárjában létrehozott, az 1956-os forradalom és szabadságharc bukása után a magyar ügyet vizsgáló ún. Ötös Bizottság. 128
