515151 Bős-Nagymaros Today when we call on the financial institutions to issue no more loans to Hungary, we are also making a pledge to pay for the expenses of freezing this project, if your Government would decide to do so. We make this pledge not only in the name of the two million Hungarians living in the West, but also in the name of the environmentalists and archeologists of the World. Therefore I would also like to inform you of a pledge by the following environmentalist leaders: Dr. Brent Blackweider, Vice-President of the Environmental Policy Institute in Washington, Mark Dubois, Director of the International Rivers Network, Dr. H. Jungius, International Director of the World Wildlife Fund, and Franz Meister, Director of the Okologie Institute in Austria. This distinguished group guarantees, that if Hungary agrees to a public referendum and allows an impartial third party to determine the cost of freezing construction, then they will intercede with the international financial institutions to compensate Hungary for the expenses. Dear Mr. Prime Minister, it is still time to recognize this project for what it is, a white elephant of Stalinist planning – monstrously expensive, of dubious utility, ruinous to the environment and contrary to popular will. It is still time to reestablish the international and domestic credibility of your reformist Government. It is still time to comply with the Constitution and to share this grave historic decision with the entire Hungarian nation. We ask and hope that you will do that. Respectfully yours, Bela G.
