Mrs. Gergely Kovács Report of the Foundation of the Postal and Telecommunication Museum for 2003 The outstanding event of the year was the Postal Museum’s successful bid for the title of Museum of the Year, 2002, which focused special attention on the museum. There was a significant increase in attention from professional circles, the media, and the public, who were happy to share the joy of the Foundation’s staff. Administration and business management As of the latter half of 2003, our Foundation took over management of the social insurance data for all staff employed by our founders. We received these data on microfilm and in hard copy, and are charged with maintaining and managing them, and with providing the data services specified by law. In 2003, we provided such data on 553 occasions. Dr. András Katona, chief curator of the Museum of Transportation gave a presentation on supervision at the Stamp Museum. There he proposed that the museum request an exemption from the new record-keeping system. Starting with this year, we have completely computerised our Foundation’s financial and business transactions, ranging from accounting to depreciation. The result has been a significant improvement in our business records, which are now completely up-to-date. The successful bid of the two museums required keeping to a tight schedule of work, which would have been well neigh impossible to maintain without the information technology specialists employed by our Foundation as service providers. Both the Hungarian Postal Service and Antenna Hungária refused to register the use rights to the real estate and facilities used by the museum. We have already completed the legal preparations for including the newer rules in our founding document. The decision to upgrade utilities at No. 3 Andrássy Boulevard without any prior coordination created a great many operational problems for our Foundation and a good deal of extra work for our staff until it was successfully completed. We re-visited the set of orders issued by management over the years and earmarked quite a number for cancellation. Others we resolved to amend. We plan to publish them in a uniform framework - following legal coordination - in the first half of 2004. We eliminated the hazards discovered during an examination of the electrical systems at the Stamp Museum. In preparation for the investment at Balatonszemes set to get underway in 2004 (construction of a roofed shed, renovation of the garden, upgrading of the plumbing and electrical systems, establishment of a telecommunications memorial), we commissioned Arker’s of Kaposvár to prepare the designs needed to apply for the building permit. Work with our Collections As soon as the computer network was in place at the Stamp Museum, we began testing its record-maintenance programs. These programs have been based on existing records of 316
