Opened on Sep­tember 4. • Prague ‘98 - African Animals on Hungarian Stamps. Opened on September 10. By the Postal Museum • Letters of 1848. Opened on May 17 in the Postal Museum. The exhibition presented the organization, management and operation of the state post office during the revolu­tion and war of independence of 1848-9. It recalled the events between March 1848 and October 1849 in original and photocopied letters. • Gábor Baross and Ferenc Puskás Bom 150 Years Ago. Opened in the Telephone Mu­seum on June 6. The lives of the ‘Iron Minister’ and of the man who built the Budapest telephone system. • In Memóriám Lieben. At Nagyvázsony, the home of one of the grandparents of Robert von Lieben, inventor of the Lieben tube. • Broadcasting Anniversaries: 65 Years of the 314-metre Mast at Lakihegy Transmitter Station and 40 Years of the Széchenyi Hill Television Transmitter. Opened in May at the Radio and Television Museum, Diósd. • A Hundred Years of the Szombathely Telephone Exchange. Opened on May 29 at the County Arts Centre. • Fifty Years of the Pioneer Post. Opened on July 31 on the premises of the Children’s Railway Station at Csillebérc, near the former central camp site of the communist Young Pioneers’ Movement. • The Miskolc Post down the Decades. Opened at the Post Horn Gallery in Miskolc on October 7. The Postal Museum’s latest exhibition room, in the attic of the Miskolc Postal Directorate building, has 78 sq.m, of exhibition area, a 6 sq.m, office and 30 sq.m, of storage. The first exhibition here shows the postal history of Miskolc, complete with a post-office interior. Some small letter-handling machines and items to do with newspa­per distribution (a traditional post-office task) are shown here for the first time. • A Hundred Years of the Postal Vehicle Depot. Opened at the Postal Museum on Octo­ber 7. Shows the buildings, equipment and vehicles of the depot, which has played an outstanding part in the history of postal deliveries. (The Museum also contributed a local display for the celebrations at the depot itself.) • Advent Salon. Opened on December 13 in the Postal Research Institute Conference Hall, as a joint event with the Institute. Twelve artists showed 120 works of pure and applied art between the second and last Sundays before Christmas. There were also musical and literary programmes every afternoon and activities for children on Satur­day and Sunday. • Events of the Gábor Baross Memorial Year. In the Postal Museum from December. The exhibition tableaux show the events of the year in Budapest and the provinces, from book launches and wreath-laying to the closing concert at the Vigadó. Some display cabinets present for the first time the winning design and other designs for the Gábor Baross memorial plaque. 236
