Tele-World Bulletin (Televilaghirmondo) (Announcement of tender for supplementary event) The supplementary event, tying in with the themes of the World Exposition Expo ’96, aims to introduce the possibility of communication spanning the entire globe with the aid of telecommunications. The idea is to collect universal, comparable data on the 186 member states of the United Nations on the basis of pre-defined subjects as outlined below. The governments of the member states of the United Nations, or an international organization of the United Nations (UIT) - which later could through its data transfer services ensure the “distribution” of this world material building into a electronic world encyclopedia - should be requested to prepare 49, one to three-minute compilations on each subject. With computer processing this could even operate as a “motif atlas”. Each “motif’ could be distributed on a separate cassette. The establishment and arrangement of subjects would serve to further universal understanding. From this material a record could be created of life on Earth and its inhabitants at the turn of the millennium. Considering the 186 member states and assuming three-minute compilations for each subject, 150 minutes of material would be prepared by each country, building into a total projection time for all countries of 462 hours. With a different topic each day, and in country order according to the French alphabet, it would be possible to continuously project 9.5 hours of material during the opening hours of the exhibition. The World Expo’s telecommunications centre would be the most suitable place for the projection of the material. If this is not possible, it could be projected anywhere by setting up a temporary projection tent, even in the Radio and Television Museum in Diosd. Our subject list requires further detailed drafting later on in order to ensure similar quantity material for each theme, but because of size restrictions on the announcement of tender we can only include the most important content. • The map, the name, the flag, coat of arms, a view of its capital, parliament, its main civil legal dignitary, and the national anthem of the country. • The natural geographical characteristics of the country: configuration of the terrain, the highest and lowest points, minerals, rocks, types of earth, caves, active volcanoes. • The waters of the country: springs, rivers, waterfalls, seas, lakes, reservoirs, snow and ice lines, glaciers. • Vegetation of the country: forests, parks, grassland, reed beds, arable land, gardens and typical flora with the emphasis on plants appearing in folk traditions or national symbols. • Fauna of the country, introduction to the wildlife and domesticated animals with special consideration to an introduction of animals and birds on the coat of arms. • The regions, areas of outstanding natural beauty: mountains, mountain passes, hilly country, forests, marshland, plains, deserts, islands, peninsulas, seashores, bays, straits. • Nature protection, protected natural environments: national parks, reserves, introduction to protected plants and animals and their natural environments. 151
