Data of the History of the Postal Horse Relay Station at Szemes

The study furnishes interesting data concerning the history of the Faluszemes postal horse relay station operating since the end of the 18th century. It introduces the register of property of the Hunyadi family made at the beginning of the 19th century, as well as the equipment of the post office operating in the building of the mansion.lt introduces the horse relay station, the inn beside and the coach-house belonging to the station. The study deals with the reconstruction in the first half of the 19th century of the postal roads in Somogy county. It appreciates the economical importance of the Buda-Fehérvár- Siófok-Zagreb-Fiume postal road passing by Szemes and the important role the Szemes postal station plays in the life of the villages in North-Somogy region. In 1861, as the Southern Railway was inaugurated the Szemes horse relay station ceased to exist and the postal road also lost its importance.
