Development of Telephone Exchanges After 1945

The study introduces the development of the exchanges and PBXs in the local and trunk networks: the exchanges before 1945 of type 7A in Budapest and of type 7D in the provinces. Crossbar exchanges were installed by the Hungarian PTT first in 1971 and progressively replaced the old rotary exchanges. Later, the electronic exchanges appeared.

After a brief overview of the trunk exchanges (IT1, IT2, IT3), the author introduces the new crossbar exchanges serving domestic and international traffic. She states the PBXs developed at a quicker pace and preceded the state of development of the main exchanges. She enumerates the traditional electromechanical PBXs (Rotary, Cito mat, Standard), then describes the RA and RX family and the CA crossbar PBXs. She deals with the electronic stored programme controlled (OA and EP) PBXs. Finally, she writes about today s problems and the quantitative and qualitative contradictons of telephony.
