1656, he was not subordinated to the Calvinist superintendent, those 15 points have not been imposed upon him and his jurisdiction was wider than any other of his predecessors. These were possible probably because he was from a very well known family of hierarchs and of fighters against Ottomans, on one side; on the other, probably because of the alliances concluded by Rákózy a year before with the princes Constantin §erban of Tara Româneascâ and Gheorghe §tefan of Moldavia.-' After many battles concerning the rule upon Transilvania, the Turks have succeeded to impose upon the throne the prince Mihail Apafi (September 1661—15th of April 1690). Breaking out some divergences between Brancovici and Apafi, the last one, stimulated by the Calvinist superintendent Kovásznay Péter, gave a decree on the 20th of February 1669, by which 4 restrictions were imposed upon the Metropolitan Sava, identical in essence with those imposed upon Simion §tefan in 1643. Among these, the hardest was the subordination of the Metropolitan to the Calvinist superintendent “in matters regarding the ordination of priests and of archpriests, the destitution of those unworthy or the readmission of those who promise the improvement of their life... as well as regarding the summons and the leading of the Romanian general synod” etc. There were also some requirements which seemed to be favorable to our Church, but their real purpose was to convert I to Calvinism: the foundation of Romanian schools, the reopening of the printing house and the celebration of the liturgical services in Romanian.23 24 On the 14th of July 1674, Mihail Apafi ordered that the orthodox Metropolitan, together with the archpriests, priests and all the Romanian churches should be submitted to the new Calvinist superintendent, Tiszabéczi Gáspár. This was to “take care of all the Romanian churches and to lead them according to the conscience of his soul”.25 The successor of Sava Brancovici in the Metropolitan See of Transylvania was Iosif Budai, elected in [une 1680, but confirmed by the prince Mihail Apafi only on the 28th of December 1680, when he imposed upon him 19 obligations or restrictions (those 15 im23 Ibidem, p. 69. 24 Ibidem, p. 72. 25 Ibidem, p. 73. 23
