THE RULES CONCERNING BISHOPS IN AN EARLY GREGORIAN CANONICAL COLLECTION

(Diuersorum patrum sententie siue Collectio in LXXIV titulos digesta)*

1. The Collection

During the epoch of the Gregorian reform in the 11th Century the Roman Church attempted to give an official answer to many questions which had arisen in the previous age, especially in the 9th and 10th Centuries.1 The most important of these questions were the primacy and the authority of the Roman Pope.2 To explain then- standpoint, the compilers of the new canon law collections of the Gregorian epoch used to the pseudo-isidorian forgeries or interpolated texts.3 The Diuersorum patrum sententiae siue Collectio in LXXIV
