Szabolcs Anzelm Szuromi: Rules concerning bishops in the Decretales Pseudo-Isidorianae, especially the regulation on the death of bishops

RULES CONCERNING BISHOPS 147 I. The Collection The Decretales Pseudo-Isidorianae arose between 847 and 852, very probable in the diocese of Reims.8 The structure of this collection is defined by the origin of its sources. At the beginning we can find papal letters9 which are followed by the text of Donatio Constantini.10 Then there are situated the conciliar canons,11 and finally more letters from popes and other authors12 until Pope Gregory II (715-731). More than half of the canonical material of this collection is false or interpolated. The text-fragments attributed to popes before Pope Damasus (366-384) are very significant. Naturally, we can find in this collection the whole material of the discipline regarding bishops from the Collectio Dionysio-Hadrianae. II. Disciplinary material concerning bishops in the Pseudo-Isidorian Collection The rules concerning the duties and rights of bishops can be grouped into six main themes. Naturally, this classification contains some similarities. There are the following themes: 1) the ordination of bishops;13 2) the personal qualities of bishop;14 3) the du8 Edition: HINSCHIUS, P.
