238 GY. BENYIK 1901 a private Theological teacher, and from 1904 academical professor at the Department of New Testament Studies. He wrote many studies and translated The Book of Ruth (1896). PÉTER HATALA (1832-?), Doctor of Theology, university professor, and member of the Petőfi Society. He translated the Scriptures from the Vulgate but also compared them with original texts. An illustrated version was published with 230 pictures and drawings (1869). ISTVÁN HAMAR (1867-1933) studied in Kiskunhalas, Budapest, Edinburgh and became the professor of the Old Testament at the School of Theology in Budapest. He was also the custodian of the Ráday Collection. His best known work is the Biblical Lexicon (1919). He published his Biblical translations, The Book of Hosea and The Book of Isaiah in the Protestant Review (1897). Translations at the Turn of the Century ANTAL HÁM (1865-1927), Piarist Provincial. Translated The Book of Jonah (1902) and The Book of Malac hi (1906). JÁNOS JÓNÁS made a translation of The Book of Job (1904). ALADÁR HORNYÁNSZKY (1873-1939), a Lutheran university professor. He studied Theology at Budapest, Pozsony and Göttingen. He taught Old Testament Studies at Pozsony and later became the doctor honoris causa of Göttingen University. He translated Nahum (1905), Isaiah (1916), Deutero-Isaiah (1916), The Letter to the Romans (1923), The Letter to the Thessalonians and The Letter to the Hebrews (1936). Most of his works were published in Lutheran papers. SÁNDOR RAFFAY (1866-1947), Lutheran writer. He recived a diploma of Law and Theology in Pozsony and attended lectures at the universities of Jena, Leipzig and Basel. He translated The Apocrypha of the New Testament99 from Greek. This volume contains the Gospels of Hebrews, Ebionits, Egyptians, Peter, James, Thomas, the epistles of Barnabas and Roman St. Clement, the Laoditian Letter, the Apocalypse of Peter and The Acts of Paul. Until 1980 and the publication of László Vanyó’s work, this was the only Hungarian version of the New Testament Apocrypha. ISTVÁN SOÓS, a Carmelite monk.
