RECENSIONES 219 RECENSIONES Josef HERIB AN, Prirucny lexikán biblickych vied (The Hand-Lexicon of Biblical Sciences) Slovenskÿ ústav svâtého Cyrila a Metoda, Roma 1992,1348 pp. Dr. Josef Heriban is professor of Biblical Sciences in the universities of Tokyo, Malina and Rome. His ’Hand-Lexicon of Biblical Sciences’ is an unique attempt to gather information on basic terms and notions from the sphere of biblical science, and make these available in a single work of reference. The Lexicon, containing over 3,300 items, records the most frequently occuring terms of the biblical sciences and their auxiliary disciplines. The user will find many specialist terms as well as many important biblical notions which complete one’s basic knowledge of the Bible, for example introductions to the individual canonical writings of the Old and New Testaments, and basic ideas of biblical theology. There is an obvious effort to give the reader a full understanding and explanation of neologisms and other expressions which have come into scholarly use in the course of the past ten years. During that time the biblical world has been enriched by many specialist terms. Besides the items arranged alphabetically, the Lexicon contains two other parts: prolegomena and enclosure. The prologemena includes the basic knowledge necessary for any use of the Lexicon and indicates among many other things the contents of biblical writing and literature, transliteration of biblical languages, abbreviations and symbols. The enclosure also incorporate important data based on the auxiliary disciplines of biblical science, and are useful for a better understanding of the information introduced in items such as archeological, historical eras of Palestine, empire rulers and dynasties of the ancient Near East, maps of biblical countrie, and excavations in Palestine and in Near East.
