Tibor Somlyói Tóth: The forms of religious mentality in the Anjou age
140 T. SOMLYÓI TÓTH 27 allotment. Michael, son of knight Dezső Elefánti, in order to avoid punishment for his despotic measures, founded the monastery of St John the Baptist at Felsőelefánt27 28; moreover, in his testament of 1375 he also leaves his vineyard of Elefánt and mill on the Nyitra river, to the order of the hermits.29 30 Thomas, John and Peter, noblemen of Enyere, in Zala county, in the diocese of Veszprém had a chapel built in the honour of the Virgin and also donated two lots to the hermits who constructed there a monastery. In 1371 the relatives George Bebek and Ladislas Csetneki, sons of the late Stephen „comes”. Lord chief of Justice, founded a monastery in honour of th Blessed Virgin in Havasalja, or in a district called Gombaszeg, in the county of Gömör.31 32 We have knowledge of two Pauline monasteries in Gönc; one was raised in dedicated to St Catharine, the other, in honour of the Blessed Virgin. In 1371 Louis I permits the monks of the monastery to build a mill on the river. The monastery of Hangony, built in honour of St Anna, was founded by the local noblemen Lazarus, Domonkos and their sons in 1368, yet this endowment, too, may be included among the donations inspired by the honour of the Blessed Virgin. For, as well know, St Anna is the mother of Mária. In Kalodva, north-west of Lippa, already Ladislaus IV had donated the part of an estate to the local hermits. They increase their estate with a purchase in 1308; and thus it is likely that the monastery built in honour of the Visitation of Our Lady stood already at the and of the XIIIth century. In 1359 King Louis I gave a piece of land from his royal estate of Kalodva, which, as they remark indignantly, had already been given to them by Ladislas IV and which endowment was confirmed by Róbert Károly as wall as by Sigismund later.33 1377 Louis I in the vicinity of the amber castle of Pozsony county, within the diocese of Esztergom donated the piece of land called Thall to the Paulines in order that they might settle down and found the monastery of the Blessed Virgin.34 The foundation at the Mariavalley is 27 Inventarium OFH, 46. 28 MOL Dl. 5803. et Dl. 6257. 29 Inventarium... 9. 30 Vitae fratrum XXIII.c. 31 Inventarium... 39. 32 Inventarium ... 78. et 70. 33 Inventarium ... 88.; Vitae fratrum XXX. et c.
