RECENSIONS

RECENSIONS 293- based on the tradition - not only about the end of this earthly life of the human being, but also on importance of the daily sacramental life - particularly about the receiving of the Holy Eucharist and the frequent Confession, moreover about the Extreme Unction - and the frequent pious works, prayers of the relatives and the church’s community for the faithful departed, which is a particular obligation of the living faithful in order to promote the salvation of souls. This theme and its development in the 12th and 13lh century described in Chapter XI of this volume (162-168). The last two chapters focus on the internal peculiarities of the ecclesiastical discipline and their relations to the contemporary state law. Therefore, we can get an overview on the elements of concept of “sacred power” and its formation - based on the traditional doctrinal and disciplinary sources - until the reign of Pope Gregory VII (a. D. 1073-1085) and Pope Boniface VIII (a. D.1294-1303) [169-179]. There is a minute summary on the relations between the Church and the single states and also the legal historical framework of that in Chapter XIII. This section shows firstly the contents of the Concordat of Worms (a. D. 1122) and concludes with the Council of Konstanz (a. D. 1414-1418). The above analyzed volume - which is finished by a detailed and updated international bibliography (193-219) and supplemented by a general index of names, councils, Roman- and canon law sources (221-224), moreover manuscripts (225-226) - has been appeared within the series of the Bibliotheca Instituti Postgradualis Iuris Canonici. Professor Sz. Anzelm Szuromi’s new book gives balanced and moderated overview on the system of the medieval canon law discipline, on its ecclesio- logical bases and historical effects. The Author remains continuously within the framework of the medieval canonical sources, therefore he can explain an authentic picture for the readers about the contemporary principles of canon law. Through this interpretative horizon, this particular work in unique mode complements the understanding the medieval canonical knowledge and thinking on the international scientific level.
