STUDIES - Astrid Kaptijn: Codex Canonum Ecclesiarum Orientalium - Important Questions

«CCEO» - IMPORTANT QUESTIONS 179 most of the discussions during the revision-process. The particular aspect of oecumenism, more precisely «Codification and Oecumenism», was presented by René METZ, emeritus professor of the University of Strasbourg, who has been a consultor during the revision process of the Code of Eastern Canon Law. In fact, professor Metz examined the role of oecumenism in the four codifications, viz. the Latin code of 1917 and the texts of the former eastern canon law, neither of which mentions «oecumenism»; the guidelines for the revision of the Latin code did not speak of oecumenism, while on the contrary those for the revision of eastern canon law did, but the CIC of 1983 containes some canons on the subject even if it does not contain a whole chapter on it as is the case in the CCEO. The specific situation in France with the existence of an Ordinariate for the eastern faithful living in France was treated by Jean PASSICOS, ordinary professor at the Faculty of Canon Law in Paris. He traced the history of the Ordinariate as well as its juridical figure. The fact that the jurisdictional power of the Ordinary for the eastern faithful is exercised cumulatively with the power of the local ordinaries and that the Ordinary for the Eastern faithful often also must consult the Congregation for the Eastern Churches, as well as the authorities of the different Churches sui iuris, creates a complex situation that has been illustrated during the lecture by several concrete examples. The Convention was closed by a Mass in the Greek rite in Saint- Julien-le-Pauvre, the church of the Greek-Melchite community in Paris, celebrated by archimandrite Msg. Paul Abdou, parish priest, together with the professors Salachas, Vasil’ and Zuzek. The church-choir kindly contributed to the holy and festive aspect of the sacramental mysteries. The Acts of the Convention will be published by the end of 1998 in volume 40 of L’année canonique, the periodical of the SIDC and the Faculty of Canon Law in Paris.* Astrid Kaptijn * This volume can be ordered at the editor’s house: Letouzey et Ané, 87, boulevard Raspail, 75006 Paris, France.
